SETTINGS

A calm mountain lake. The morning sun is just beginning to creep over the peaks and the birds echo through the valley. The distant clouds carry hues of red and pink. A hint of moisture blankets the land.

A small town in England. The narrow cobblestone streets are empty save for a child riding his bike. The houses are small with heavy fences in front. There is an old pub on the corner whose sign looks as though it’s about to fall.

A hotel in California. The front rotating doors lead to a marble-floored lobby with a winding staircase set in the middle of the room. Overhead are three chandeliers, one of which is missing a crystal. A row of elevators line the far wall, while soft music plays on in the background.

A path in the woods. Small saplings hide among the dense rows of massive trunks. Large branches jut out from under piles of dead foliage, filling the silence with thunderous cracks. The rustling from some unseen animal is heard from behind.

A busy city street. It’s mid-afternoon and traffic is thick. Horns blare in the distance, while sirens screams somewhere nearby. A school bus sits just up ahead, waiting for the light to turn green, as an old lady attempts to cross.

A beach in Hawaii. A soft breeze lifts off the ocean, lightly caressing the sand. An empty hammock swings gently between to palm trees, as a wave crashes into the coastline, leaving a solitary shell on the shore.

A fishing boat off the coast of Norway. Rigs begin to freeze in the icy waters. Men scurry to break chunks of solid ocean from the bow as another wall of frozen fury slams into its side, rocking the vessel from side to side.

An Egyptian marketplace. A mixture of aromas fill the air, as do the sounds of haggling and laughter. Vendors from all over show their goods, offering spices, textiles, exotic animals and, for a price, antiques.

A Christmas tree farm. Miles of pines lined up in perfect rows. Different sections for different stages of life, giving many a chance to grow. In the distance stands a lone tree in all it’s glory, waiting for a home.

A hill-fort castle. Towers of stone rise above the skyline. Miles of stone walls surround an encampment of military and citizens striving for survival. Men, women, and children all working to secure their world.
